We enjoy walking in the mountains and valleys around our home and although our activities were curtailed during the very hot summer, the weather has cooled considerably since September, making it more comfortable. Sometimes we walk from our villa across the ‘campo’ or countryside in our own valley and recently visited Isbert’s Folly, the small but disused dam in the gorge in the Vall de Leguart. We had only previously visited this place by car but the 10km walk there and back was very enjoyable.

We also discovered this year the Ruta de los 8 pueblos, the route of the 8 villages, in the Vall de Gallinera which is a half-hour drive away but allows to vary the distance we cover each time between the villages, where we are able to stop for a coffee or sometimes for lunch.

Tap dancing and singing

We continue to be busy with two of our hobbies – Celia’s tap dancing and Vernon’s singing with the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir.

Once again, Celia took part with her dance class in what has now become an annual event – the Tapathon – in aid of BBC Children in Need and an attempt to break the world record for the number of people tap dancing at the same time. The record of just over 7,500 has eluded them so far but they are keeping their fingers crossed that their luck will change this year. This year Vernon supplied the PA system for the half-hour show, which ensured a better sound for both the dancers and the audience. A video of the record attempt can be viewed here

For the second year running, the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir was asked to join the Remembrance Service, organised by the local branch of the Royal British Legion in Moraira Church. Included in the boy’s performance this year was a new and very poignant song from the film ‘We were soldiers’ called ‘Mansions of the Lord’.

DSCF4684 (1024x606)In June 2016, we visited Terra Natura near Benidorm with some of the parents and children of Guardian Angels, the single-parent charity with whom we are both associated. Everyone had a great day and we were able to take some great photos of animals, which you can view below.

13592701_1020743807980548_1390996642743406445_nVernon appeared in a concert with the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir at the Salon de Actos on 1st July, finishing it’s summer season with a unique concert at Teulada in memory of our great friend Keith Hart and raising a magnificent €2,504 for the Make a Smile Charity. Apart from our normal choral pieces, the lads performed a range of unique pieces from Master of the House, a Policeman’s Lot, Vernon’s amazing monologue of ‘ 50 shades of Grey’, Albert and the Lion, Lonnie Donegan, a bit of Welsh, superb singing (and drumming) from Terry and Claire and her flute, with Heather’s magnificent piano as always, all brought together with the terrible jokes of our beloved President Mike Evans!

We have finally booked our long-planned trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, including an 8-day cruise on the River Mekong, for January 2017. We shall be spending New Year in Wexford at Simon and Mary Lou’s new house and Chris and Georgie will be joining us. We’ll then fly back to the UK to see Vernon’s Dad and then fly out from Heathrow to Hanoi to start our next big adventure!

Chris bookChris published his first book, A Celebration of Aviation”, earlier this year and it’s selling on Amazon

He also accompanied Vernon’s dad, Phil Pearce, when he was invited to attend a special event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the first Spitfire flight on 5th March. View a slideshow of the photos he took on the day here
